Meet our colleague Nils Hansen, Head of Business Development & PIC for Data Center Logistics from Bertling Malaysia

“Can you take us through your journey at Bertling Logistics, how did you start, and what key moments shaped your career here?”

I joined Bertling in March 2024 as Head of Business Development, tasked with generating new business opportunities and building a strong local sales team for our Malaysian operations. Coming from a purely GFC forwarding background, I was excited to take on this new challenge in the project sector.

Through close cooperation with our pricing, management, and engineering teams, we secured our first project within just three months. This gave me valuable hands-on experience through site and port visits, road surveys and witnessing the transport and loading of equipment onto vessels, which I had not encountered before.

In November 2024, I had the opportunity to represent Bertling Malaysia at the Global Sales Meeting in Houston. This was a valuable opportunity to share our local progress with colleagues from around the world and discuss potential new markets. During the meeting, I presented the data centre industry as a promising new market sector for the company.

Shortly afterwards, we learned that the next Global Sales Meeting would be held in Kuala Lumpur. Our team was excited to showcase Malaysia and introduce our local operations. During the planning phase, I was also appointed to spearhead the development of the global data centre vertical, which is set to begin in 2026.

Fast forward to 2026 and our Malaysian BD team has grown to four people, focusing on both project and GFF clients while strengthening relationships in the energy and data centre sectors.

"Since 2026, you have been looking after growing DC Projects at Bertling Logistics in addition to your Sales Function in Malaysia. How is that going?

Balancing day-to-day business, supporting our clients and managing our local team while developing a meaningful data centre product is certainly challenging. A big part of this involves managing time well, ensuring that local sales activities stay on track while maintaining momentum within the global Data Centre team at Bertling.

Since we are working on data centre opportunities globally, time zones can make communication challenging, particularly between Asia and North America. Having supportive colleagues in different regions makes a huge difference and helps to keep things moving despite the distance.

Staying organised and connected is key. Our global CRM system helps us to keep track of opportunities and upcoming developments, and regular MS Teams exchanges make it easy for our global PICs to stay aligned and share updates and information about upcoming events. Together, these tools help us to keep both the local business and the global Data Centre initiative moving forward.

“Which key selling points for DataCenter projects can Bertling offer and which potential do you see in Malaysia?

Companies involved in building, maintaining and resupplying data centres have very specific requirements. The most important factors are health, safety, security and compliance, followed closely by the need for a reliable supply chain that avoids disruptions — because every hour counts when a data centre is being built or is already in operation. Sustainability is also becoming increasingly important, with governments and clients pushing for more transparent and environmentally friendly supply chains.

Bertling supports data centre clients by addressing all these priorities. We provide end-to-end logistics solutions across all transport modes and cargo sizes, backed by a robust global network and local teams who offer a personalised service. We already collaborate closely with existing data centre suppliers on ongoing energy and power projects, and we are building on this foundation as the sector continues to grow.

Our in-house engineering and heavy-lift expertise enables us to manage complex transport projects, supported by our proven track record in global energy, power and renewable projects. By providing services from a single source, we ensure clear accountability and efficient coordination throughout the supply chain.

Through our BLU4U platform, clients can enjoy secure supply chain visibility and real-time tracking. Combined with our flexible logistics solutions, the platform helps to measure, reduce and compensate for carbon emissions while ensuring that critical projects continue to run smoothly.

Malaysia is emerging as one of the key data centre hubs in Southeast Asia, driven by demand from hyperscale providers, digital growth and its proximity to Singapore. Major players such as AWS, Google, and Microsoft are investing heavily, supported by government incentives, competitive costs, and improving infrastructure. Key locations such as Johor, Cyberjaya, and Selangor are developing rapidly alongside a growing focus on sustainable, energy-efficient data centre designs.
