Biogas Trucks Reduce CO₂ Emissions by 200 Tons

Biogas Trucks Reduce CO₂ Emissions by 200 Tons

Bertling Enviro is part of a circular collaboration with Tekniska Verken Linköping (TVL) and Skaraslättens Transport aimed at reducing emissions from transport operations while strengthening resource efficiency across the value chain.

As part of the collaboration, Skaraslättens Transport has invested in two biogas-powered trucks dedicated to transporting baled RDF (waste fuel) to TVL’s energy from waste plant in Linköping. At the facility, the waste is converted to heat and electricity, contributing to local energy recovery and circular resource use.

The collaboration is designed as a circular system. TVL not only processes waste into district heating but also produces biogas at their own biogas plant, and this gas is used as fuel for the trucks transporting the waste. This creates a closed-loop model where energy production and logistics are integrated within the same system.

Compared to diesel operations, each transport using biogas reduces CO₂ emissions by 100.21 kg. With an estimated 2,000 transports a year, the collaboration is expected to reduce total emissions by approximately 200,420 kg of CO₂ (around 200 tons) each year.

To put this into perspective, our CO2 savings are equivalent to:

  • 1,666,667 km of car travel or driving 42 laps around the Earth.
  • About 333 round-trip flights between Stockholm and New York.
  • The annual energy consumption of 100 Swedish homes.

Biogas plays an important role in the initiative as a renewable fuel with significantly lower climate impact than fossil fuels. It enables up to 95% CO₂ reduction compared to diesel and helps reduce particulate and NOx emissions.

The collaboration between Bertling Enviro, Tekniska Verken Linköping, and Skaraslättens Transport demonstrates how integrated circular systems can deliver measurable emissions reductions while improving resource efficiency in transport and energy flows.
