For this month’s Sustainability KPI, we have focused on a tricky yet very important topic: commuting. Traveling to and from work is part of many people’s everyday lives. Ideally, commuting should be short, efficient, affordable, easy, and sustainable. However, it can be difficult to meet all those criteria, and many of us have limited options when it comes to how we can commute.
Still, we believe that we together can overcome this challenge and support each other in making commuting more sustainable. As an organization, we can offer remote work opportunities on certain days, which can significantly reduce commuting emissions. As colleagues, we can share rides to the office instead of taking separate cars, and as individuals, we can consider biking, walking, or using public transport instead of driving.
With a focus on commuting this month, we asked all our offices to identify measures to boost greener commuting. With each office having its own local constraints and possibilities, we are very happy to see all the initiatives amongst our offices.
For example, our Beijing, Shanghai and Swedish offices encouraged all employees to choose a greener commuting option for one day. In Sweden, employees who participated took a picture of their “Green Commute”, and the pictures were then set up on the “Wall of Green,” followed by a fika celebration together.
For our organization, commuting accounts for a significant share of our corporate emissions, and we must continue identifying ways to reduce those emissions. We are on this journey together - Bertling’s Road to Zero.
