John Hark speaks at JOC's Webcast "Recalibrating for a New Normal"

06 May 2020

Discussing the impact of Covid-19 to the logistics industry

On 28 April 2020 JOC’s Breakbulk & Project Cargo Conference took place as live webcast for the very first time. Usually this annual event takes place in New Orleans, USA. Amongst other industry experts, our colleague John Hark, Chartering Director for Bertling in North America, was invited as speaker.

The webcast started out with interesting insights on the global and regional economic outlook provided by Sara Johnson from HIS Markit followed by a speech about the impact to the Oil & Gas industry and capital projects held by Jim Burkhard, VP from Global Oil Markets.

Then the panel session “Executing Project Cargo Logistics During a Global Pandemic” with John followed next. The speakers shared their views and experience about the impact of the global corona crisis to the logistics industry and how their companies so far have responded and adapted to the challenging environment. It was good to hear that we are all sitting some sort of in the same boat and are not alone with our fears, thoughts and hopes.

John said that we at Bertling were also not prepared for such a crisis on global scale. However, now we are all set with our employees getting used to their new way of working from home and that we will in the future even more drive towards digitization, IT and new ways of collaboration. John also also explained that we at Bertling see every crisis as chance as well to review internal processes and develop new ideas and approaches to successfully overcome the crisis.

Or to quote the words published by the Heavy Lift Magazine when they summarized the webcast’s storyline: “A key takeaway from the session is that, while the project logistics industry is small, it is essential and resilient. Its people have proven themselves capable of overcoming the challenges that this crisis has thrust upon them”.
